I hope you have all had a fantastic week and have been enjoying your veg box. Hot pots have been the theme for me with a few stews, a soup and a curry over the last week. It must be something about the dark nights which makes these particularly satisfying. Firstly I’d like to issue an apology to those of you who get a small foreign veg bag or more than one variety of fruit. There was an error with our order which meant we were short of the fruit and veg. This means nobody will get small foreign bag or more than one variety of fruit. We will issue credit notes for this shortly. If you get a standard veg box there’s also a couple of items missing, we will give you extra next week to make up for this. If you don’t get a delivery next week we’ll issue you a credit for that too.
This week on the farm it has been pretty mild through approaching the very darkest point of the year means little is growing. Despite that we still have quite a bit of beetroot, leeks and kale to harvest along with smaller quantities of radish and Jerusalem artichokes which we can be lifted at any time till early spring.
Most notable on the farm this week has been dealing with the preventative measures following the outbreak of avian flu on the continent (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38231416). Our chickens and ducks normally free range over a large area and so making modifications to keep them contained away from migratory birds and still content has been a bit tricky. They now have a much smaller area outside which is covered in netting along with their house which we’re adding a Christmas tree and other random bits and bobs to provide some form of entertainment for the 30 days their space has to be restricted. I guess guess one saving grace for them is that they aren’t turkeys and they will get out again…
Christmas! On Friday the 23rd we will do a extra big double delivery to see you through Christmas and New Year as there will be no delivery from us on the 30th. If you’re staying at home for Christmas it should see you through the holiday, if not then perhaps you can bring the veg where you are going? If you’re not going to want a delivery on the 23rd please let us know by next Wednesday so we can plan ahead and reduce waste.

Finally here’s what you should have in your veg box this week:
Small:
Potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, leeks, delicate squash and a bag of red kale.
Standard:
Potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, leeks, savoy cabbage and a bag of red kale.
Large:
Potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, leeks, savoy cabbage, mushrooms, beetroot, khol rabi, radish, and a bag of Sutherland or red Russian kale.
Extra Large:
Potatoes, carrots, onions, parsnips, leeks, savoy cabbage, mushrooms, beetroot, khol rabi, radish, and a bag of Sutherland and red Russian kale.
