Press Release:
We’re delighted to announce the opening of Locavore Grocery, Scotland’s first Social Enterprise Supermarket, with the official opening event taking place this Friday evening, May 18th.
The 6000ft2 shop, located in Govanhill, Glasgow, achieves all sorts of firsts. It is the first social enterprise supermarket in Scotland, the largest mostly organic, mostly unpackaged store in Scotland; and it has the first fully organic cafe in Glasgow. It is also home to the country’s first milk vending machine, saving 100+ plastic bottles per day.
The opening happens as Locavore celebrates 6 years of successful trading growing from a tiny community food hub into a diverse enterprise working towards food sustainability by growing local produce, offering veg boxes across central Scotland, and supplying organic groceries to other stores around the UK. Locavore also trains the local growers of the future and provides emergency food to those in need through their Good Food Fund.
The shop aims to offer an alternative to mainstream supermarket supply chains with the goal of building a more sustainable food network which is better for people, planet and local economies.
Reuben Chesters, MD @ Locavore says “For us this is a massive step in our journey towards building a more sustainable food system. A larger store with more footfall means we can grow the market for our local, organic and ethical producers. It also gives more people the opportunity to purchase affordable food which is better for the environment and the local economy.”
With all elements of Locavore growing it is set to become a Social Enterprise with a multi-million pound turnover in this financial year which will allow it to invest even more into building a better food future.
The expansion has been made possible thanks to a huge amount of support from many of our customers who invested anything from £250+ into the expansion, as well as support from First Port and Zero Waste Scotland.
The store is open from 8am-8pm every day and is located at 349 Victoria Road, G42 7SA.
