Veg Box Newsletter w/c. 2nd December: the calm before the storm

Hello Folks,

Today was a beautiful day, with a clear, blue sky and frosty ground. Veg Box HQ looked ethereal in the clear afternoon light. It’s almost December, which, let’s face it, means it’s basically Christmas, so I know all the whirl and rush is about to start. I love Christmas, and even the hustle and bustle of it, but this calm moment before the frenzy is a beautiful one. It’s wonderful to take a moment to appreciate life’s simple joys. Primary among them: vegetables.

This week, we’re fulfilling your hearts’ fondest wishes with onion squashes, kale or chard, turnips, chioggia, and rosemary. That sounds like it’s already a great soup to me. The larger fruit bags have cooking apples as well as eaters, so a pie or crumble seems to be on the horizon for you. If you have a supplementary veg bag as well as fruit, why not use the bay leaves in a custard to eat with your crumble? The tomatoes and watercress they have makes a wonderfully bright, fresh salad which contrasts with the root veg we’ve settled into.

Good Food Fund

Thank you to the customers who donate to the Good Food Fund. One of our partners, the Govanhill Community Canteen, recently lost an important funding source. They offer a free weekly hot meal to a multicultural gathering of people from the Govanhill area and are staffed by volunteers from the Roma community. It’s an important resource for the local community and we are very happy to be able to support them with the help of your donations. We hope that your donations will enable them to continue their work.

You can donate via the Open Food Network shop, or email us to set up a recurring donation.

Monthly Specials

This week, the meat boxes go out, full to the brim of organic meat for your family. Next week is the Vegan Box and the Cheese Box, so email now if you’d like to try either! Both are a wonderful way to add a little something special to your month.

Both the Treat Boxes and the Pulse, Grain, and Pasta boxes will be going out with the deliveries in the week commencing 16th December, so you’ll need to let us know as soon as possible if you’d like to try one then.

Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
