Veg Box Newsletter 13th January: Just Call it Joy-nuary

Hello Folks,

January can be so glum and dour but there’s a joy to be found in eating even the grey seasons. Perhaps we’re all getting a little tired now of the root veg, the beetroot and celeriac and sprout tops and what not, but that is inspiration to be a little more creative. The veg is local (in some cases very local, as we see claytonia from our very own farm make a reappearance!) but your flavours don’t need to be. Celeriac and beetroot work with ginger, leeks with miso, squash with turmeric. Grate carrots and dress with salt, sugar, and a squeeze of lemon juice for something miraculously fresh in the dead of winter. Juice oranges and mix with sugar and a pinch of salt, then freeze in a shallow dish, raking with a fork every few hours for a granita that has all the brightness of a cold clear day but all the sweetness of the Spanish sun that ripened the fruit in the first place. I hear it’s meant to snow next week; I hope it does, but that might make granita an unappetising proposition, in which case baked apples and custard may be more of a treat. And curries and daals and noodles and deep bowls of spiced coconut milk soup and chillies and and and. We’ve also got some exciting events coming up to fill your new diary or cat photo calendar, so scroll down for those.

Mossgiel Milk Bottles

Mossgiel are no longer able to collect and reuse unbranded milk bottles, so sadly neither are we. We’re still able to take your rinsed out Mossgiel-branded ones (with the lovely blue logo) when we deliver your orders though, so keep em coming. And be sure to email us if you’d like to try their delicious organic milk- we do whole and semi-skimmed.

Two films by Zev Robinson

The discussion will explore the role of local food producers and distributors in developing visions for food sovereignty in Scotland.
