Hello Folks,
It’s a bit of an anxious time, huh? When I get anxious, I love to cook. I think it’s some kind of protective instinct: if my cupboards and my fridge are full, if I have food for myself & my community, then surely everything will be OK. It’s a way to care for my loved ones and a way to take care of myself. I want to feel that I am nurturing those around me in difficult times, and I want the safe feeling of a belly full of delicious food. And if I can know that the ingredients I cooked with were grown and transported to me in a way that helped, not harmed, the planet, then I feel that I am doing even better: being nourished and nourishing. That it is possible to have what we need, and to even have joy, without destroying anything, is an increasingly radical idea, but also an increasingly important one. At Locavore, it is at the heart of what we do- or at least the way I understand what we do.
In the boxes this week we have crisp, delicious claytonia from our very own farm. We have a very little bit of purple sprouting broccoli, which is phenomenally exciting as it’s been very scarce this year. We have more of that amazing Scottish kale, versatile and indispensable, and some fresh new cabbages from down South. I hope you enjoy cooking with this wholesome, delicious food as much as I will!
Events
Standard Veg Box Supper Club – Tickets
18th March, 8 – 10pm
You are invited to join us for the first ever Standard Veg Box supper club. The challenge we give our guest chefs for this event is one that our veg box customers face weekly – to make a delicious meal with the contents of this week’s Standard veg box.
This time the event will be hosted by our very own veg box team: Adam, Sally, Sam and Saoirse will be serving up a two course meal for you using the contents of the veg box. It’s a lovely opportunity to meet them in person, meet other veg box customers, sit and eat together and chat about all things veg box.
You will be able to buy soft drinks in the shop or you can bring your own drink – corkage fee of £1/ person for alcohol. The meal will be vegetarian. A vegan option is available; please let us know by email or when you make the booking if you are vegan or have any other dietary needs.
£11, meal included.

Screening and Panel Discussion
For thousands of years, people have been producing food in sustainable ecosystems with no environmental damage. The industrial revolution brought large influxes of people into cities and divorced them from their traditional food ways. The advent of petrochemical industries and industrialized food production led to supply chains that are no longer transparent for the consumer.
Food used to be – for the most part – a relatively simple question of production and consumption. Now our choices seem determined by a complex myriad of factors with an infinite number of consequences and much of it feels out of our control. However, we do have some say as consumers in the choices we make. Do we buy from local shops or go to supermarkets? Do we buy meat and dairy products and if so, how much and from where? Do we buy locally produced food or are we equally responsible to growers in other countries as we are to those in our own? How about the carbon footprint of each product? And are we equally concerned with the environmental and human damage caused by clothes and electronic goods produced by child labour and in sweatshops?

Good Food Fund
In January 2020 our Good Food Fund sent out £1004.41 worth of fresh fruit and veg to our partner organisations who work with people living in food poverty, running foodbanks and community meals. Many of these projects rely on leftovers from supermarkets and have little choice over what they receive. Thanks to your donations we can send fresh fruit and veg out to our partners on a weekly basis. If you would like to add a small donation to your subscription, do just drop us an email.
Monthly Specials
