Veg Box Newsletter w/c 25.03.19

Hello Folks,

You may have noticed that we’ve been running low on carrots in the past couple of weeks and you may have received an unexpected substitution for them! This is because we’ve been trying to upkeep strict quality control on them, however, as we don’t want to create waste, you might find one or two soft / moist patches. Hopefully you can save the majority and chop off the bad patch for the food waste bin. We’ve been in touch with Chapel Farm about the quality of the carrots, and next week, we’re trying a different supplier to see if there’s a difference in quality. We’re beginning to reach that time of year when our supplier’s winter stores are fast depleting, and the warmer temperatures compromise quality.

On that note, you may have also found the produce in the veg boxes is getting a little samey week to week. Again, this is because we’re reaching the end of winter veg (with less and less choice of UK produce), and we’re yet to see the beginning of new season crops. What have we got to look forward to? Rhubarb, new potatoes, cucumbers, herbs and other leafy greens… Lets just hope the weather perks up for those late Spring/early Summer salads!

We’ve another screening in April, hosted by our Zero Waste Team. We’ll be showing the short films ‘Growing an Abundance of Food in the City Using Permaculture’, ‘The Black Isle’, ‘Local Food Roots’ and ‘Kindling: A Sustainable Food Revolution’. There’s more information here, and you can get a ticket here.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Good Food Fund. We use your donations to send fresh fruit and veg to our partners who work with people living in food poverty. We have recently started sending a box of fruit a week to the Marie Trust. They are an organisation in the city centre that offers a daily meal as well as access to showers and laundry facilities and opportuntities for personal development to people who are affected by homelessness. The Marie Trust first made us aware that fruit is unaffordable for people who are homeless. Your donations are helping to make it available for free at one of our city’s most important daytime facilities.

As this is the fifth week of the month according to our veg box calendar, there are no monthly specials scheduled for delivery this week. You can find more information about our monthly specials here, as well as their delivery schedule.

The winner of March’s Munch of the Month competition will be announced this week, and they will receive a hamper alongside their next order. Many thanks for all of this month’s delicious entries!

If you are also a shop customer, you may also like to check out our recent Facebook post about refill stats on milk bottles, oats and oil! We love re-filling.
