Veg Box Newsletter- 14th October: Roast Veg and the Return of the OFN

Hello Folks,

I’m writing this at the end of a very wet and windy week, full of blustery days and blocked noses. Cooking delicious meals is such a comfort at times like this. In the box this week is a selection that would make a wonderful roast- parsnips, potatoes, beetroot, carrots. It could be served alongside a roast chicken, maybe, or maybe some crispy chickpeas and feta. It’s so easy to cut veg up, toss it with olive oil, salt, and herbs, and stick it in the oven, and the slow cooking rewards us by intensifying the flavours. It can be meditative, on a lazy day, to slow down while cooking, and pay close attention to the vegetables we’re handling, to think: this onion is from here, this potato from there; to look at the shapes and colours we’ve pulled out of the ground. I love complicated recipes where veg is transformed into something wildy different from its original nature, but sometimes roasting the veg, simply and slowly, gives us a chance to appreciate what was already there.

Or maybe I’m just feeling lazy in this wild weather, and in need of comforting, sticky roasted parsnips; sweet beetroot with dark edges where it’s caramelised; crunchy-fluffy potatoes; and carrots with coriander seeds.

The Open Food Network

Great news! The Open Food Network shop is back open this week! Time to stock up on Locavore beans, tinned tomatoes, and olive oil. We’ve made some changes to what we offer, so you may notice that some things you’re used to ordering there are now gone. This is so that we can streamline things in our packing shed and make sure we’re not offering items we can’t always provide. We have a limited amount of refridgerated space for non-veg box items, so have had to reduce our chilled offerings to the basics. We’ll be looking into reintroducing favourites, as well as introducing new items, so be sure to let us know if there’s something you’d like to see.

One popular item that will be returning very soon is orange juice! We’ve changed suppliers, so let us know if you’d like to add orange juice as a subscription. It will be back in the Open Food Network shop soon.

Fruit Bags

We’ve had some supply problems with clementines this week, so lots of boxes will be missing them. We’ll be providing a bumper fruit bag for everyone in two week’s time (to make sure all you fortnightly folks don’t miss out) to make up for it! Let us know if there’s any particular fruit you’d like us to keep an eye out for when ordering- no promises, but we love to know what you want to receive.

Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
