Hello Folks,
Another week of watching the leaves slowly turn bright as the nights begin to draw in, gathering like a heavy blanket round your shoulders. We have veg boxes full of verylocal veg for you- most of it is coming from Chapel Farm, here in Scotland. When you’re mashing your swede or sauteing your leeks, do so confident in the knowledge that they’ve not travelled far to be with you. I hope you enjoy these cosy, comforting veg, as well as all the exciting fruit: cherimoya, feijoa and apples tasting just a little bit like pineapples.
Introducing Your Veg Box Team
Hi! We think it’s high time we introduced ourselves to you all properly, starting with yours truly.
My name is Saoirse, which is pronounced to rhyme with inertia. Aside from writing the newsletter and posting recipes each week, I’m often hard at work responding to your emails and making sure you’re all as happy as larry with your fruit and veg. I’m from London originally (not a fancy bit- just Willesden), but have been living in Glasgow since 2012. I moved here to study English literature, but somewhere between undergrad and my masters, I fell in love with this brilliant city, so now I’m all settled down and I don’t think I’ll ever leave. I love most vegetables, but my favourite is undeniably garlic: I love to make 40-clove garlic chicken at the end of a long week. But then I’m also very into beetroot, and clementines, and leeks. I’m a keen cook, so please send me your recipes, as I’d love to give them a try! It’s lovely to meet you all.
Monthly Specials
Last week’s Pasta, Grain, and Pulse boxes went down a treat, featuring popcorn, polenta, mung beans among their graces. Next week the special boxes are the treat boxes- and they sure are a treat! The sweet boxes (look away now if you want to keep them a surprise) include fig snacks, wild berry kombucha, cashew nut butter, honey waffles, and chocolate almonds (plus lots more). Let us know if you’d like to give any of our monthly specials a try. At £20, the treat boxes are a great way to give yourself , and your household, something to look forward to each month. Personally, I can’t wait for a slice of hot freedom bakery bread, perfectly toasted and spread with gooey cashew butter.
Look Out for Changes
Protests in Spain this week have led to some difficulties for our suppliers who import Spanish goods, so we might be unable to get hold of the Spanish fruit and veg in some of our Fruit Bags and Supplementary Veg Bags. We’ve had a few other ordering and supply problems this week, so you might notice more changes in your deliveries than usual when compared to the list. We’re working hard to make sure we have great subsititions in place, but let us know if you have a delivery with something missing and nothing replacing it. We’re looking forward to next week’s bumper fruit bag to make up for these problems and last week’s clementine shortage!
The Good Food Fund
The Good Food Fund would like to thank those veg box customers who make regular donations to the initiative. With food poverty on the rise, we sent out the biggest amount of donations last month. This month, for the first time, we have had to turn down a request for support. If you would like to add a small donation to your subscription, please send us an email to let us know. For the ten charities we currently support, your donations provide a rare opportunity to access fresh fruit and veg. Thank you for continuing to make this work happen!
Flowers
We’ve loved having flowers for subscription and on the Open Food Network this year, but alas, the season is almost over. Next week is the very last week we’ll be offering flowers for this year, so make sure to get your orders in if you want one of these incredibly pretty bouquets.
Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
