Hello Folks,
You know, there’s not much to say about November. Nestled in, as it is, between two such agressively themed months, it’s easy to overlook entirely. But as it starts to get properly cold, a quieter month is a valuable thing. Listening to the crows caw, watching the magpies gather their nesting material, walking under the sodium glow of streetlights in the early evenings- this gentle transition into winter proper can be a time of quiet delight. And what goes better with quiet delight than wonderful organic vegetables? Not much in my book.
In season now: parsnips, cauliflower, butternut squash. The pumpkin craze may be over, but hard-skinned butternut squash are a treat that helps ease us into winter. And they’re so nice roasted! I never want to get creative with my cauliflower, since I think cauliflower cheese is already pretty much the pinnacle of culinary perfection, but if you’re inclined to use it in more varied ways, it’s a veg that rewards experiementation. Let us know what you make with it!
Introducing Your Veg Box Team
This week, the longest standing member of our admin team, Adam!
“Hi
everyone! I’m Adam, one of our veg box admin assistants. I’m
something of a veg box all-rounder, having started working for
Locavore as a delivery driver in 2018. Over time I ended up taking on
additional work packing the veg boxes in our packing shed and
providing some admin assistance in the office. A wee while later, and
I’ve now settled into a full time position in the office. While I
do occasionally miss being out on the open roads, the cold and wet
weather we’ve received recently certainly makes me appreciate being
indoors with a warm cup of tea to hand!
As we’ve all be
sharing our favourite veg, my nomination would have the be the humble
potato. For me there’s nothing more comforting than making an
irresistibly rich mash or a nice warm winter stew. Cheap, cheerful,
easy to grow and endlessly versatile. What’s not to love?”
Monthly Specials
This week, those of you subscribed to our cheese or vegan boxes will be enjoying wonderfully tasty treats. If you’re not getting one this time around, let us know if you’d like to try one next month!
Next week, we have the pasta, grain, and pulse boxes, so sign up by this Wednesday to order yours. It’s a great way to try new things which could become a staple for you and your household. Last month’s boxes included jasmine rice, mung beans, popping corn, and spelt pasta. This month’s? It’s a mystery, but I’d put my money on some delicious, wholesome ingredients you’re sure to put to good use.
Customer Survey- Thank you!
A huge thank you to everyone who filled out our customer survey! We’ve had an incredible response, and it’s brilliant to know what you’ve been enjoying (and what could do with some adjustments). We’ll be reading the responses and using them to help decide what we grow on our farm over the next year, as well as to help guide us with our purchasing now. Here’s to always getting better!
The Good Food Fund
Thank you to the customers who donate to the Good Food Fund. One of our longest standing partners is Queen’s Park Govanhill Parish Church Foodbank and Club 170. These two services provide emergency food to people with homelessness and addiction backgrounds in our neighbourhood. We have been supplying them since 2017 when they made us aware how unaffordable fruit is for people who are living in food poverty. Your donations were the first source of fresh fruit for these projects and it is thanks to your generosity that we can continue supplying them on a weekly basis.
As always, let us know if you’d like to add a weekly or monthly donation to the Good Food Fund to your subscription (or increase your current donation) so you can help support its work.
Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
