From mid June until mid August we are running a support campaign for the Glasgow Night Shelter at our shop. The Glasgow Night Shelter is an almost entirely volunteer run organisation that offers a safe place to sleep and a hot meal to destitute refugees. Every night of the year it opens its doors to refused asylum seekers and homeless non-EU migrants who are not eligible for any financial support and not allowed to access the normal homeless services. You can read more about the Night Shelter here: https://glasgownightshelter.org/
Much of the food for the meal they cook every night is sourced through volunteer collections of leftovers from shops, supermarkets and wholesalers. Relying on these sources for food does not leave the volunteers a huge element of choice over what to cook. When we spoke with the Night Shelter they gave us a list of items that are popular with the people who sleep there, but hard to source for the volunteers. Three of these items, lentils, rice and tinned tomatoes you can now donate to the Night Shelter through our shop. You can buy donation vouchers for one tin of tomatoes, 200g of rice or 200g of lentils. These are priced between 60p and 80p. We will add fresh veg to the value of our profit on these items, so that 100% of your donation goes to the Night Shelter.
Since the beginning of May, we’ve sent 110 veg boxes at cost price to The Space, and 26 cases of fresh fruit and vegetables to the South East Food Bank. Thanks to your donations, we were also able to purchase 3 cases of chickpeas, a 10kg sack of lentils and 60 eggs for the Night Shelter.
We would like to say a hug thank you to all our lovely customers for their donations. There are a number of ways you can donate:
- Pop some coins in the green Good Food Fund tin, which you can find in our shop and in a number of cafes and venues across Glasgow
- Donate weekly, monthly or as a one off with a bank transfer or standing order to our Good Food Fund bank account; sort code 80-22-60; account number 12354669
- If you subscribe to our veg box scheme, you can donate through the Open Food Network or add regular donation to your invoice – just email us!
