Veg Box Newsletter 27th January: Potatoes! Potatoes!

Hello Folks,

Potatoes. I love them. They aren’t the most glamorous of veg (that is, of course, the artichoke). What they are is delicious, and also versatile. They go well with any other veg you can think of- certainly everything that’s in our veg boxes this week. You might just have to experiment with them a little! I found this round-up of potato recipes interesting and inspiring as a place to start, setting me off craving fluffy, butter-enriched mash; latkes with crispy edges and soft centres (scooping up sour cream); light, bouncy gnocchi tossed with pesto. And chips; thank goodness there’s always chips. This recipe for oven fries makes the best home-made chips I’ve ever had. A fried egg, some garlicky sauteed kale, and a pile of crisp, golden chips: it’s optimism on a plate.

The potato is an unapologetically everyday sort of vegetable. It keeps well in dark, cool cupboards (better still caked in soil) so we have them most of the year round. They lend themselves to the strong flavours of other foods (the rich dairy of a dauphinoise or cheese & chips, the tender lightness of a fish pie, the spiced depth of a potato curry) but have a delicious and often underappreciated flavour themselves. Sometimes it’s important to recognise the quiet brilliance of these brown, ordinary vegetables. They’re potatoes. You can do almost anything with them. They’re reliable, and tasty, and guess what- they’re in your veg box.

Good Food Fund

Thank you for your continued donations to the Good Food Fund. One of our more recent partners is Auldhouse Community Church in Pollockshaws. Their foodbank and community cafe provides emergency food as well as a welcoming space for chat or advice for 30 people per week, most of them come from the local area. They had previously only been receiving donations of non perishable items so your donations provide them with the first access to fresh fruit and veg for their project.

Apples and Pears

After we had some issues with our delivery of apples and pears last week, they were missing from a lot of fruit bags, so we’re making it up with bumper apples and pears this week for those affected. If you’re not sure how to use them, here are a few ideas:

Squash, apple and shallot traybake with sausages
Apple and kohlrabi gratin (plus apple and cheddar latkes, apple pancakes and more)
Apple crumble (of course)
Beetroot and apple salad

Pear picalilli
Poached pears

Pear and gruyere pie

Campaign for a Healthy, Fair and Sustainable Food System – Tickets
run by Scottish Food Coalition

Food is at the heart of some of Scotland’s biggest challenges, from inequality to ill-health to ecological damage. Many people are priced out of a decent diet, reliant on food banks and suffering the consequences of poor nutrition. We are failing to adequately value the people who work to produce and process food, the farm animals, or the wildlife and resources that enable us to eat well.

Scottish Government is currently writing a new law on the food system – the Good Food Nation Bill. The Scottish Food Coalition is heading the Good Food Nation campaign to make sure the Bill promotes a fairer, healthier and more sustainable future for Scotland’s food system- and we would love to hear from you!

Join us for the evening- in this interactive workshop, you will have the opportunity to share your concerns about the food system, learn more about the Good Food Nation campaign and find out how you could get involved in the movement for a socially and environmentally just food system. No previous knowledge or experience is required.
