Veg Box Newsletter for Week Commencing 16th December: Christmas Time, Vegetables and Kind(ness).

Hello Folks,

Christmas is a time for coming together and seeing those you love. It is a time for resting and regrouping, gathering energy for the new year. To celebrate what is good, and what lasts, which is the golden core of kindness we have inside. It’s also a time for feasting, gathered in a warm pool of light in the dark cold night. We are delighted, at Locavore, to supply the veg that nurtures you and yours this festive season. In the veg boxes, bumper and otherwise, we have lots and lots of very local veg, almost all of it from within Scotland. As always, our supplementary veg and fruit bags look futher afield, and are chock-a-block with delicious Christmassy flavours: peruvian ginger, rosemary and bay leaves, clementines, and dates. These are the bright lights that twinkle in the dark and call to us to be compassionate, to hold joy in our hearts, and to have good will for everyone. Here’s to a 2020 full of local organic veg, community, and cheer! Happy holidays, everyone, and a happy new year!

✨ 🎄 Christmas Schedule 🎄 ✨

You can read all the info about how veg boxes work over the festive season here, but here’s a reminder of the key dates:

9th December Order change deadline for orders in w/c 16th December (This has now passed)
w/c 16th December Last veg boxes before Christmas! Bumper boxes!
w/c 23rd December No veg boxes.
w/c 30th December No veg boxes.
w/c 6th January We’re back for the new year! Veg boxes resume!

Please note that if you receive the bumper box, we count it as two weeks’ boxes so charge you for two weeks for it. This includes your good food fund donation, but not any extras like cheese, bread, milk, or eggs. If you’re not sure what to expect this week, check out the cheat sheet down at the bottom of this email. Remember that we’re then closed for two weeks!

📦🥔That’s a lotta veg!🥔📦

A lot of the larger veg boxes this week are very very heavy, full of stocky root veg- the bumper boxes are absolutely massive. If you live upstairs, please think sympathetically of your poor driver, lugging hundreds of these boxes over the course of the week. Can you give them a hand getting it up the stairs? Maybe we can leave it downstairs for you or a neighbour to bring up? Please let us know if we can let our drivers know that you’ll help with the heavy Christmas load. If you’re collecting your veg box, and getting a bumper box make sure you’re prepared to carry them home- maybe bring a friend and thank them with a beetroot. We’re talking 16kg for some of these bad boys.

❤️ Good Food Fund❤️

This week the Good Food Fund is sending out veg for the Christmas dinner at Gal Gael. They run training courses in woodwork aimed at people who have been long term unemployed. Among other things they build boats, which is particularly poignant given the effects that the decline of the ship building has had on the Govan area. We are happy to support such a meaningful project and grateful for your donations that make this happen.

You can donate via the Open Food Network shop, or email us to set up a recurring donation. Why not make it a new years’ resolution to donate more to those in need? The fight against food poverty needs you more than ever.

🍫🍝Monthly Specials🍝🍫

This week, the Christmassy treat boxes and the pulse, grain, and pasta boxes fly to you on gossamer wings to make your delivery a little bit extra special. Want to know what’s coming your way? In the pulse boxes are red lentils for your nut roast, popcorn for munching on in front of The Apartment, porridge oats for your cold weather breakfast, and macaroni for your boxing day pasta bake. The treat boxes have mince pies, vegan chocolate, Christmas tea, redcurrant jelly, apple juice, and much much more. We hope you enjoy them!

Check out storage guidance here for helpful tips and tricks on how to prolong the life of your fresh produce. If you’re wondering where your veg comes from, have a look at these maps. You can also join your fellow subscribers over in the Facebook group and check out our Veggiepedia!
